Now as to the word “men,” if you believe it was just an all-inclusive plural pronoun or that the founders really only believed that men and only men were created equal and only they were endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights (rights which cannot be taken, surrendered, bartered or sold), does not diminish its inherent and inerrant truths!

WE, that hold these truths are every man, woman and child the world over. Our republic, our form of government put them into writing in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America put into writing, the defense and preservation of these truths! WE the People are, the Hope of the world!

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (every man, woman and child) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men (every man, woman and child), deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

   How would you like to have a treasure in your hands?

   How would you like to have a mystery, a treasure, a miracle so incredible and there was no one or few that even know about it? What would you do? Would you shout it out from the highest mountain and let it reverberate from sea to shining sea? I would! So did the founders of the United States of America when Liberty was written in the Declaration of Independence, published July 4th, 1776. Did you know it almost never happened? Did you know the Constitution of the United States in 1789 almost never happened? Did you know a French sculptor named Frédéric Bartholdi wanted to present a colossal monument to the United States from France for the bicentennial, July 4th, 1876? Did you know that it did not happen because, there was not enough interest and certainly not enough money to make it happen? He persisted anyway and finally, ‘She’ was dedicated on October 28, 1886.

   Did you know that the Statue of Liberty underwent a 30 million dollar face-lift’ in 2012, only to be closed due to hurricane Sandy? Did you know the statue was not damaged, but the park and the statue has been closed and is scheduled to re-re-open again for a re-re-dedication on July 4th, 2013? Did you know this would mark Her 127th year since She was dedicated and Our 237th year, since We the People began?

   How would you like to know that an original 21″ Bartholdi bronze statue might exist and has been hidden, unseen and unknown since it was made by the sculptor 129 years ago, referenced in a U.S. Patent that he made to drum up support and funds, so that WE the People could have this symbol of our, “Liberty, Enlightening the World?”

Is this the “missing” Bartholdi statue?

   Would you believe that I wrote a post on this blog: https://ourladyliberty.wordpress.com/2009/06/17/lady-liberty-birth-of-an-idea/ in 2009 and recently (2013), I received comments from a man (Eric of Sarasota, FL) that has such a statue? Would you believe that all he wants to do is to share this statue with the world? What a story, what a book, what a movie; what a miracle this could be to all of US, WE the People!

   What does Liberty mean to you? What would you do for Liberty? What can you do? Excellent question? Let us each start here!

   Without being able to absolutely verify the authorship of the following poem, as it seems latent with controversy, though it may have been written in the 1700’s, I will quote it simply as: -author Unknown-

When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. — Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.

He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected, whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither, and raising the conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial from punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burnt our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty & Perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these united Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States, that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. — And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

Today: WE Hold These Truths” – Excerpt from The Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776

Does truth exist? Are there any truths in existent? Are there any such things as self-evident truths? It is one thing to hold these truths, but quite another to be ‘held’ by these truths.

Any writer and that which is written in its final form have without question, evolved from one or a series of ‘rough drafts’ until the final version is committed. Even then, revisions and such things as the 2nd, 3rd; 4th editions and so forth are published later.

Sometimes this is due to the corrections of inaccuracies of fact, spelling mistakes or just typographical errors missed inadvertently by a proofreader. Sometimes new editions contain updated or enhanced information. Sometimes new editions may simply have an updated cover or something as simple.

Often new editions are a publisher’s attempt to sell more works to the same buyers or to expose the work to a new generation or to a new group of readers. There are many reasons for new editions as things and even facts can change. But is not truth or truths considered to be universal? If something is true today for you and I, will it also not be true for anyone in the world – anytime in the past, the present and the future?

Facts change. As I write this, someplace in this world it is probably raining. As I write this from my office in my hometown, it is not raining. Both of these facts can change in time.

But a truth is like when clouds are sufficient and moisture within them heavy enough, gravity will cause rain to fall. This does not depend on race, creed, and color of skin, intellect or socio-economic situation. It is what it is. Perhaps this explanation is too simplistic or not simple enough, but it will have to suffice. But facts change and truth or truths are universal and for lack of a better word, they are eternal – have always existed and will always exist, with or without us.

Each of us holds certain truths, they may be mere facts, but to us that hold them, they are truths or our truths.

My pocket at the present holds a wallet. It could by my choice, remain where it is. I could decide to not use any money, credit card, anything or any information contained in my wallet. In this sense, I would hold a wallet, but I am not held by the contents of that wallet nor have any benefit of those contents. This is what I mean here in holding the truth and being held by the truth.

To be held by something, to be committed to a goal or cause, logic necessitates that WE must first hold the truth. To benefit from the contents of my wallet, I must first have a wallet with contents.

The hands of knowledge, WE must lay hold upon it. The eyes of our understanding, WE must be open to it. Then WE may choose to be HELD by what WE hold or not.

Perhaps there is no other phrase in US American history more familiar and yet so unknown at the same time to many, than from The Declaration of Independence dated July 4, 1776…

WE hold these truths to be self-evident…”

WE begin here with the first word, “WE.” Who are the WE referred to in this document? From the first line it is written, “When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people” In following the context, “one people” relates to WE and the 56 signers of this document which were representatives of their perspective colony of the original thirteen. A representative represents a certain number of people and collectively, the 56 signers represented the majority of the people of those original 13 colonies. Therefore, “one people,” 56 signers and the people they represented are equal to each other. In mathematics, things equal to the same thing are equal to each other. “WE” were and WE are, WE the People.

WE Hold These Truths to be self-evident…,” what does this mean? The answer is given in the words to follow, “that all men [the word “men” is an all inclusive noun which includes women], “are created…”

The word “created” means to have brought in the past, into existence or that which exists that had not existed before. It is associative of a creator. Whether or not all people at the time of this writing in 1776 or at this time in 2009 believe in creation or a creator does not negate that many of the “WE” of this writing did believe and it may logically follow that a majority did. Regardless of belief, the “truths” are still “self-evident.” Why are these “truths” “selfevident?” How is it possible that “WE” are all “equal?”

We know that each person is different and that makes each unique, but WE are also in many ways the same. WE are equal in the sense that WE all have potential to achieve “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.WE are each “endowed” [are equipped or supplied with talents, abilities, potential and quality]. As normally fully equipped and upright beings, WE can think, move, grow, learn, adapt, evolve and change. Without restrictions, limitations, regulations, grants, licenses, taxation without [proper] representation, economic failure, traumatic climate change, social order, health and legal disorder, favoritism and nepotism, permissions or impositions, WE can each pursue at our own discretion, direction and speed –  “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” These “truths are self-evident!

These “certain rights” are “unalienable,” [they cannot be separated, given away, sold, or taken away]. “Among” these “certain unalienable rights are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

To secure these rights, Governments are instituted.” The powers of governments are “instituted among men” [an all inclusive noun] and these governments “derive” or receive their power “from the consent of the governed” or WE the people.

Whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, [life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness] it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government.”

Prudence,” [caution; discretion]indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light [non-essential] and transient [lasting only a short time; existing briefly; temporary] causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.”

These are the Truths WE Hold. WE hold them in memory in some part from perhaps long ago when WE heard or read the words in school. WE hold them in the archives of our nation’s capitol. WE hold them in our hands as WE reach for them as a copy rolled up at some souvenir store. WE hold them in our eyes when WE read the words. WE hold them in our ears when WE hear them. WE hold these truths like the picture above. It is like the negative of an old 35mm photograph, WE recognize them when we see or hear the words, but the details; the color; the vibrancy, and life of the words are virtually unknown. And the negative is fading.

These words were written over 200 years ago. They are dated. They fade and are unclear and unimportant to some like an old negative of a photograph. But are they outdated as most of the fashions worn in 1776? Are these words mere facts; relevant only to the people of the day and the times in which they were written? Or are these words timeless, eternal, true, truths and “self-evident truths?”

All experience hath shewn [has shown] WE are “more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable than to right [ourselves] by abolishing the forms to which they [WE] are accustomed.” [Do WE settle – Have WE settled for less than our “certain rights” of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?”

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces [to show clearly; make evident or manifest; prove] a design to reduce them [WE] under absolute Despotism, it is their [Our] right, it is their [Our] duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their [Our] future security.”

Those that are empowered, those that have the knowledge, and those that have the understanding or are able to affect and/or influence change, are responsible to DO IT!

Our rights, Ourinalienable rights” are not much more than a wallet in the pocket or a purse on the arm, unless they are opened and used to Our own benefit and for that of others.

WE indeed, “Hold These Truths,” but are we HELD by these truths? For ourselves, our posterity and for the future of all people everywhere, for “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness,” it is our right; it is our duty and it is our responsibility to “Hold These Truthsand to be HELD by them! And it is Our responsibility to secure these rights for those, all those that cannot secure them for themselves!

This is what it means to “Hold These Truths” and to be  HELD by “These Truths!”

It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.”
